Did I perceive a hint of Gary Cooper?  Well, John certainly won't lie a coward in his grave.

Maybe a shagged out, overhitched old comedian, but not a coward.

Is that the angry chef with the meat cleaver one?  That's scary, and brilliant.  I don't send back cutlery any more since that one.

I haven't seen that top-hat sketch, either. It looks like a scene from Oliver Twist or David Copperfield.

Looks recent...wait, is it from "SPUD", the movie he did in South Africa? There was a performance of "Oliver" in the book. I didn't remember his character being in the play, but it's been awhile since I read the book, and the movie never made it to the US, as far as I know.

Yeah...that looks like the same kid who was in the starring role.

Spud was made in S-Africa, and it's about a teacher (John) and a school & a schoolboy. That's all I know about it.

Watching these moving pics I feel like being in the Harry Potter stories.

(And I feel sick & dizzy if I look at them for too long)

One of the things in SPUD was a performance of Oliver Twist. I can't remember if professor Edly (John's character) had a part in it, though. I thought it might be from his turn in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but he looks much younger then, even through his costume.

Oh, now that the gifs have all downloaded, I see Troye Sivan in his role as Oliver--it must be from SPUD. I wish that film had come to the US!

I'm sure it's not from MS Frankenstein, I saw that several times. I love that film, however John plays a minor role - I mean he's on screen only for about 2 minutes. But what a 2-minute is that! :-)

He was great in Frankenstein. Except for the false teeth, which he said he wore so people wouldn't recognize him. I'll admit, I didn't recognize him at first, but the voice gave him away. Yes, he was wonderful.

I didn't know that, MrsT! But I recognised him immediately. :-) Why didn't he want to be recognised in it?

I suppose he didn't want to be confused with Basil Fawlty.

People over here don't remember who John Cleese is, and whenever I say, "You know, he was Archie in 'A Fish Called Wanda'", they say, "That was him?" really incredulously. Sigh. But you say "Fawlty Towers", and they know Basil. They may not know Basil was played by John Cleese, but they can quote lines and tell you what their favorite shows were. "The Psychiatrist" and "Don't Mention the War" are the usual choices. Nobody remembers "The Kipper and the Corpse", which I thought was really good.

At least, they don't remember him in Connecticut. I wish he'd come to one of the casinos or the Schubert Theater and jog their memories.
